Planning a Story

Learn it

Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Before coding, make a storyboard: a few boxes with a quick drawing and a sentence for each scene.

Ask: Who are the characters? Where does it happen? What is the problem? How is it solved?

๐Ÿงฐ Tool: free Scratch online editor (no account needed to try; a parent can create one to save projects) or the free ScratchJr app for tablets.

Code examples

Storyboard plan

Scene 1 (forest): Fox says 'I lost my hat!'
Scene 2 (river): Frog says 'I saw it float by!'
Scene 3 (forest): Fox finds the hat and says 'Thank you, Frog!'

Three scenes are plenty for a first story.

Project: Draw your storyboard

  1. Fold a paper into 3 boxes.
  2. Draw each scene: characters and place.
  3. Write what each character says.
  4. Choose 2 sprites and 2โ€“3 backdrops in Scratch that match.

Challenge: Add a funny surprise to the middle scene.
